The 17-year-old Shields shuffled, danced and slugged her way past her 33-year-old opponent, showing off the free-spirited style and brute strength that made her unbeatable at the London Games.
Shields even stuck her tongue out at Torlopova after ducking a few punches in the final round.

I watched all of the women’s boxing weight divisions and thought Shields was pound for pound one of the best in the field, along with Ireland’s Katie Taylor. She earned that gold with terrific punching power, athleticism, and controlled aggressiveness, totally outclassing her Russian opponent in the final match. She actually got a warning for sticking out the tongue one too many times, so personally I think she could do without that, but fighters do what they do and she’s not the first to get into antics intended to throw off the other fighter (half the time it backfires). Shields is still a baby at 17 and has plenty of room to improve, so hopefully we’ll see her around for a long time to come, whether she decides to stick around in the amateurs or try to make some money going pro. Either way she’s bringing an Olympic gold medal home to Flint.
