Ink and pencil study of a lady named Ms. Pearl - I should post the rest later.
Ms. Pearl is native to New Orleans, indigenous to America. She wears big flowers, handmade dresses and silver paint. She lives in her artist colony in the 9th ward and has survived two evacuations. After Katrina, she opened her home to displaced locals and some folks who weren’t doing well under any circumstance. When the police give street performers in her city trouble, she gets them legal aid for free.
Artists travel from all over to jam at her camp, right next to a huge community garden. You can stay up as late as you like.
Ms. Pearl is going to perform from Louisiana all the way to Spain someday and rid me of any fear of my own trek from Istanbul to Oslo. She turns 54 this year.
If you ever find yourself in her presence, hope you’ll be wise enough to listen more than you talk.
