Ahka Woman: “

The Akha are an ethnic group which originated in China and Tibet. The Akha began arriving in Thailand in the early twentieth century and continue to immigrate, with some 80,000 now living in Thailand’s northern provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai at high altitudes.
The Akha are animists and ancestors worshippers, and are deeply superstitious. Their religion i shighly prescriptive with many ‘rules’ about how each action should be performed. The Akha generally prefer to live along mountain ridges at high altitudes of approximately 1,000 m. The Akha are settled today in less than 300 villages.
The Akha are the poorest of the hill tribes in Thailand, and have had many problems with the Thai government, particularly with national education, medicine, land ownership and even disturbing allegations of abductions and extrajudicial killings.”
